Avoriaz resort ski lift system
Avoriaz was built in the 1960's by French Olympic downhill skiing champion Jean Vuarnet, a resident of nearby Morzine. Avoriaz perches high above the town of Morzine, blending into the cliff faces below. A series of apartments dominate the accommodation, although more recently chalets and hotels have become part of the high altitude environment. The town forms one of the major winter resorts of the Portes du Soleil region, a winter sports paradise covering a vast linked area in both France and Switzerland. Avoriaz is at the centre of the Portes
Du Soleil winter sports region that is one of the largest
connected ski and snowboarding areas in the World. The lift
system extends over into the winter resorts of Champery,
Les Crosets and Champoussin all situated in Switzerland.
On the French side, Morzine, Les Gets and Chatel are all
easily reached by competent skiers, snowboarders and telemarkers.
A qualified ski instructor, snowboard teacher or mountain
guide will let you make the most of this extensive region.
Avoriaz, France
Perched high above Morzine, Avoriaz is
a series of interlinked apartment buildings built directly
on the ski and snowboard slopes. Skiers and snowboarders
can step out of their accommodation and start their descent
immediately without walking anywhere. Cleverly blended into
the cliff faces that surround it, Avoriaz has been listed
as a 20th century monument by the French government and
many people agree that although it lacks the charm of traditional
winter resorts, it does have stunning architectural character.
Many changes have been made since the original conception
of Avoriaz including big improvements in accommodation space.
